*** more music here!***

ok, this is the promised moers ('74 quartet) encore that everyone's given up waiting for ;-)

http://rapidshare.com/files/98284341/comp_23f.mp3

- scroll down for the braxtothon entry (day seven (2)).

now known as comp. 23f, this unusual piece ("medium tempo line with broken time accents") is not represented anywhere else in the discography, though i daresay it was performed more than once around this time... i offer it here as a teaser really (will very likely put up the whole album at some point). mp3 was compressed from a lossless vinyl rip, so the substandard sound is the responsibility of whoever recorded/mixed/mastered it! with headphones on, i was amused to notice that the stereo image seems to locate the two horn players in more or less the same space, as if one were sitting on the other's shoulders... those of you who like your sounds as hi-fi as possible may struggle! bear in mind also that this is as good as the sound gets for the album: a long portion of it is considerably worse.

it's still fascinating stuff, both because of the irregular rhythm track and because it's unusual to hear b. play a whole number on (what i presume is) bass clarinet. hope people enjoy it... let me know what you think!

bass clarinet, or just clarinet..? i don't know nearly enough about the respective ranges of the two instruments to make a proper guess, to be honest. as you can see from the october review, i took it for bass clarinet at the time... now i'm not so sure. in any case this man (like other masters... roscoe mitchell also springs to mind) makes everything he plays sound so much like *him* that it's scarcely worth worrying about...

I'd say that's a regular Bb Clarinet

seeing as I play one myself it'd be pretty embarrassing if it isn't...

err..that should be 'wasn't' obviously....it must have been a bit late when I wrote that, my apologies

massimo, thanks for clarifying that. it's the lower notes which threw me, obviously... not playing an instrument myself, i am very hazy about the lower ranges of many of the woodwinds, whereas i know that the upper ranges of all of them can be greatly extended with overblowing, etc...

Hi Centrifuge!
I have to recognaise that I didn't know this was your blog. Great! I have to go into your texts. But this is really good. I'm going to visit IYKWIS frecuently.

And now, I've found this set in avaxsphere.com, "one of that places" . But you can find a lot of good music. And you have to check jazz section too.

Well, now here is the link to

"mp3 was compressed from a lossless vinyl rip, so the substandard sound is the responsibility of whoever recorded/mixed/mastered it!"

That simply doesn't add up.

Mp3 is what wrecks lossless vinyl rips.

hi francois - sorry, that's the one subject which is not up for discussion (not by me anyway!) round here... any music files posted here will be mp3s.

cheers, c x

sorry, i will rephrase that: any music files posted *by me* - if and when mcclintic sphere reappears, he may have other ideas, that'll be up to him...

i think this may be the right place to announce my own blog. I've posted the complete Live at Moers Festival there.

http://tinyurl.com/2ltetx

It's there in mp3, but i can provide flac, too.

I like your blog, I think it's a real challenge you are dealing with. I hope my englsh isn't too bad.

sambeck, good luck with the blog, and thanks for letting us know! that's one less thing for me to do... thanks for the comments also. (your english is certainly better than my german! i can't read most of your posts, unfortunately...)

sorry, something just occurred to me last night... it's worth pointing out to some european readers that the word "certainly" used in this way in english means (always) "definitely" - this is in complete contrast to the way the equivalent words are used in french or german, for example (where the speaker usually means "quite possibly")

taken with a european meaning, my previous post could look rather rude..!

Dear Centrifuge

I did understand you exactly the way you meant it.

It's often difficult for me to explain my thought in english exactly. That's the reason, why my comments are often very short, and, maybe, cryptic. But instead of this i did some translation work at my own blog.

Greetings
