hmmmmm

so...

more reports have reached me (in bits) about the italian concerts... the vibes (as many of you may know) were not always good, none of the concerts seems to have been a complete (or unqualified) success - some of them involved more fractiousness than others but ... ah, who knows, maybe they woulda been better off getting this all outta the way years ago instead of letting it get this far before attempting it.

anyway...

there will some sort of concert reports here at some stage! i think... exactly what form they will take - don't know that yet...

* * *

braxtothon stage one was what i actually got out of my "week off" ... as you can see it wasn't really a week... and i then continued a few days later. stage two is still under construction, and i suppose it'll continue until something lets me know that it's at an end... at the moment (sneak "live preview") i'm in 1974 and with an interesting decision to make... but for the blog it's now back to 1972, and a sharp return to earth ;-)

coming soon...

*feel free to keep dropping those personal choices in (on the red light post) - one of our new converts is looking for recommendations*

I've read mixed reports as well.

Are any recordings of the concerts circulating yet? (And were any broadcast on Italian radio?)

Hey, 'converts', Cent: is this meaning me? I don't like this quasi-religious language. Besides, it can't be me - I picked up 23 Standards before my op, which makes it over 3 years ago now. I couldn't stop playing it: long, skilful, loving accounts of standards, both popular and by jazzmen. True, I didn't buy anything more until I turned up the terrific Evan Parker duo album - but that then set me off. So no Road to Damascus; just the way these things tend to work, by a gradual unfolding.

Asking for recommendations is really just a way of politely saying 'lay your personal cards on the line'. No harm in it, and possible gain.

I've ordered the book, and a second by the same guy, which deals with Braxton, Ellington and Sun Ra, the last of whom I know very little about. And by managing to copy and sell my Bill Evans Verve set, I've got hold of Iridium which came today, and which is a seriously exciting prospect, though with some complications which I can already foresee.

What happened to brevity, Ray?

hey man :)

yes, i did mean you... sorry about the choice of word, then, but the significant thing is moving from "braxton is not bad" or thereabouts to an awareness of just how deep and creative and visionary an artist he truly is - that may well not happen suddenly, in a blinding flash, but once the shift has occurred there is no going back...

there aren't that many of us unfortunately, so it's nice to band together a bit...

wow, another guy with the new box set... i can't hold off for much longer... as for the second book, yes, i am sure it will be interesting - lock is a very honest and unpretentious writer (may sound like faint praise but those are two of the highest compliments i can pay to a music critic..!)
