a quick(ish) word

i would just like to reassure anyone visiting at this point that the braxtothon is not the blog - consider it something simmering away in the background if you like... hopefully this will all be self-evident in time, as other things are brought to the reader's attention on a more regular basis... for now i'm just getting started and while the fire of enthusiasm is still burning, i'll keep fanning the flames, adding the braxtothon in instalments. in any case i never meant to publish it "live" - day one is weds 10th, and will continue tomorrow (if you see what i mean)

i realise already (at the end of day two) how impossible a task i was attempting to set myself - there is so much to notice in these recordings that summing them up is very hard, and listening to them requires time and space: there is no way i would have wanted to try and cram the days full, and in practice that isn't what i've done at all. but i do like the idea of listening in chronological order... so i'm gonna keep at it for now, and we'll see how far i get before the wheels fall off...

in other news... the british contingent have a representative in bologna as i write, with the possibility of fresh impressions of the latest encounter between a.b. and c.t., in due course... stay tuned... spread the word :)

Exciting initiative. Big Braxton fan myself. There's indeed something about his music that forces one to listen to all the man has produced, and yeah, best in chronological order - artjep

thx artjep! well - it's not the whole lot on this occasion (maybe one day...) but chrono order is the main thing... stick around :)

Nice one, cent, while we're all trying to catch uP with his oeuvre, the process is ongoing. At 62 the man still seems tireless. Will be back,
hasta luego for now

There's what looks like an interesting bootleg on ebay at the moment;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTHONY-BRAXTON-DEREK-BAILEY-LIVE-AT-WIGMOR-RARE-IC-2Lp_W0QQitemZ170156925990QQihZ007QQcategoryZ306QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Does this contain music that has never been issued on Emanem? I wonder what the bootleg source is.

t

do us a favour and tinyurl that would you ;-)

ive already pretty much ruled out all-star duets, trios etc from the shortlist (terribly hard to do it but needed to get the list down in size, and a sense of b as a composer rather than as a player - that's the same thing for guys like monk, not the same for b AT ALL)

Have you posted the list of the recordings you intend to cover? I picked up the 1972 series F saxophone improvisations yesterday and have been listening to them together with For Alto.

thx t - well, nice looking item... BUT... "currently unavailable in any form"?? er, NOT... i'll be charitable to the seller here and assume that this is just confusion/ignorance and not a blatant lie... ALL the material is currently available - from emanem: the concert is cd4006 (first duo concert) and the rehearsal fragments are included on 4027 (fairly early with postscripts).

the ONLY thing unique about the inner city release is that it was the only issue with all 14 pieces together; it not was the "one and only release", it came out in 1980 (six yrs after original emanem 2lp)... it does have a "unique" title for what that's worth (the only version called live at wigmor, with the misspelling)...

i think one would have to be a serious collector, not just a fan of the music, to shell out three figures for this :-S

i'll get back to you about the other thing ;-)

i haven't posted a list - there isn't one

i refer you to the exposition:

http://tinyurl.com/25ba8d

which is very self-referential of me, i know ;)

- so i have been deciding on an ad hoc basis which recording will come next, from the shortlist. the shortlist is already a limited territory because i don't have a full collection (yet!!)

now - with stage one at a close and a day of complete recovery/recapitulation underway, followed by a return to "normal life" during the week (but with a very fresh perspective thanks to b's hermetic influence) - i am not yet sure what form the journey will take as it moves onwards

at this point i am still comitted to the idea of "chronological exploration", and not just as an academic exercise (or indeed mere caprice) - i actuall;y want to understand b's world in all its details and this is probably the best way to do it

even if i gave up everything and went and camped on the man's doorstep, i don't imagine he could teach me any better than by saying "go away and listen to the music, and come back when you've heard it and understood"

so i may as well just get on with it :-D

at the end of the day one first interlude i said next stop for solo sax was '74 - i got that wrong actually, it turned out to be '71 (in the pipeline) - but thereafter it WILL be '74

of course i am not there yet and the thought of what's between me and there makes me go ever so slightly weak at the knees...

That Wigmor LP is a 1980 reissue of the original Emanem with an extra rehearsal track. Check out www.restructures.net/BraxDisco/BraxDisco.htm for more info.
